Stocks snap four-day slide as oil retreats and August CPI lands near forecasts; energy and storage names lag — September 11, 2026
The Session
U.S. stocks closed broadly higher Friday, ending a four-session losing streak. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 509.19 points, or 0.98%, to 52,573.29; the S&P 500 added 0.86% to 7,656.98; and the Nasdaq Composite gained 0.96% to 26,333.04 [1][2]. The small-cap Russell 2000 lagged the large-cap gauges, finishing up about 0.45% to 2,903.94 [2]. The rebound followed Thursday's close, when the S&P 500 ended at 7,591.70, the Dow at 52,064.10 and the Nasdaq at 26,081.73 [12].
The session's main catalyst was the August consumer price index, released Friday morning. Headline CPI rose 0.4% on the month and held at 3.4% year over year, matching economist estimates, with gasoline up 3.9% and accounting for more than a third of the monthly increase [3][4]. Core CPI eased to 2.4% annually from 2.5%, in line with forecasts, though the monthly core reading came in at 0.3% versus the 0.2% expected [4]. Markets read the print as keeping a quarter-point Federal Reserve rate increase on the table at the September 15-16 FOMC meeting, with futures pricing roughly an 88% probability of a hike [2][4]. A pullback in crude — oil fell about 2.3% to roughly $100 a barrel after recent strength — and a pause in the Treasury selloff also supported equities [2][11]. The 10-year Treasury yield finished the day at 4.96% [5]. Volatility receded, with the Cboe Volatility Index down 11.21% to 15.84 [2].
Breadth was risk-on and participation was broad, with all three major averages up around 1% [7]. Technology and AI-infrastructure hardware led decisively after Oracle's finance chief guided to roughly $90 billion to $95 billion of full-year capital spending and said the outlays would flow to AI rack, cooling and networking suppliers [2][6]. Energy was the standout laggard as crude gave back ground, and defensive corners of the market trailed in the rebound [2]. Storage and memory names also slipped as traders took profits after a long run [10].
