Background

The publication traces its roots to 1908, when the ABA launched an Annual Bulletin through its Comparative Law Bureau. A formal journal began in 1915 as a quarterly and expanded to monthly publication in 1921 to keep pace with a growing readership. It was renamed simply 'ABA Journal' in January 1984 with volume 70. For most of its history it served primarily as a trade and professional resource for attorneys, covering court decisions, bar association policy, and legal career topics. The ABA's judicial ratings committee, which the Journal covers closely, has long been criticized by conservative legal commentators as having a progressive tilt, a charge the ABA disputes. In 2025, the Trump administration restricted ABA access to federal judicial nominees — a break from decades of practice — and Attorney General Pam Bondi publicly accused the organization of advancing 'radical left-wing causes.' The Journal reported extensively on these conflicts and on related pressure campaigns against ABA law school accreditation authority, giving its coverage a noticeably adversarial posture toward administration actions affecting the legal profession.
