Background

WTVD signed on September 2, 1954, as the first VHF television station in the Raleigh-Durham area, founded by Floyd Fletcher and Harmon Duncan under Durham Broadcasting Enterprises, with its original studios in a converted tuberculosis sanitarium in downtown Durham. It initially held dual NBC and CBS affiliations before Capital Cities Television acquired it in 1957, making it that company's second television purchase. When Capital Cities acquired the ABC network in 1985, WTVD converted to an ABC affiliation. Disney then acquired Capital Cities/ABC in 1995, placing WTVD under the Disney corporate umbrella, where it has remained as one of eight ABC owned-and-operated stations. A December 1991 helicopter crash near Fuquay-Varina killed three Chopper 11 crew members during a return trip from a high school football championship, a tragedy that left a lasting mark on the station. ABC11 maintains an I-Team investigative unit focused on local and state-level accountability journalism. Media bias analysts, including Media Bias/Fact Check and Biasly, rate the station as lean left, consistent with the editorial direction of its ABC/Disney parent.
