WTVD signed on September 2, 1954, as the first VHF television station in the Raleigh-Durham market, initially broadcasting from a converted tuberculosis sanatorium in downtown Durham. It launched as a dual NBC/ABC affiliate before settling exclusively with ABC. Capital Cities Television acquired the station in 1957; when Capital Cities purchased the ABC network itself in 1985, WTVD became the first network-owned television station in North Carolina. Disney acquired Capital Cities/ABC in 1995, folding WTVD into what is now the ABC Owned Television Stations group — one of eight such stations nationwide.
