Background

WTVD signed on September 2, 1954, as the first VHF commercial television station in the Raleigh-Durham area, launched by Durham Broadcasting Enterprises in a converted tuberculosis sanitarium in downtown Durham. The station was sold in 1957 to what became Capital Cities Television Corporation, a broadcast group that grew into one of the country's largest station owners. Capital Cities purchased the entire ABC Television Network in 1986 for $3.2 billion, bringing WTVD under the ABC umbrella. Disney then acquired Capital Cities/ABC in 1995, placing WTVD under its current ownership as one of eight ABC owned-and-operated stations. The station broadcasts more than 50 hours of local news per week, serving over 1 million households across 23 counties in North Carolina and Virginia. Media bias organizations AllSides and Media Bias/Fact Check both rate ABC News content as center-left or lean-left, reflecting moderate liberal tendencies in story selection and framing. Beginning in 2025, the Trump administration's FCC, under Chair Brendan Carr, ordered early license renewals for all eight ABC O&O stations—including WTVD—citing Disney's DEI policies and content decisions; Disney filed renewal papers 'under protest,' publicly accusing the FCC of unconstitutional coercion.
