Background

The station signed on August 10, 1948 as WJZ-TV, one of ABC's first three owned stations, and took the call letters WABC-TV on March 1, 1953, after ABC merged with United Paramount Theaters. Capital Cities Communications bought ABC in 1986, and the Walt Disney Company acquired Capital Cities/ABC in 1996, so the station has been Disney-owned since then. It pioneered the 'Eyewitness News' format of conversational, team-based local newscasts and has long been among the most-watched local news stations in the country. In 2025 the station moved into Disney's new headquarters in Lower Manhattan. The station's editorial line is that of a conventional commercial local broadcaster.
