Background

Airways was founded in April 1994 by aviation writer and former airline executive John Wegg and co-founder Jon Proctor, making it the oldest continuously published commercial aviation magazine in the United States. Wegg, who had worked for Lufthansa, World Airways, and Finnair in the 1960s and 1970s, positioned it as a serious, photography-driven monthly for commercial aviation enthusiasts and industry professionals. In March 2014, Wegg sold Airways International, Inc. to Enrique Perrella's Contact Airways International, which relocated the operation and formed a digital alliance with Airchive.com; Wegg stayed on to contribute historical content. On December 31, 2021, Argyle Enterprises — a Texas-based company led by publisher Steve Cosgrove — completed the acquisition and moved the editorial base to the Grapevine/Dallas–Fort Worth area, while retaining contributors in Britain and the Netherlands. The magazine reaches an estimated 56,000 readers through print subscriptions (roughly $53–$140 per year) and a companion website (airwaysmag.com), supported by aviation-industry advertising. Its editorial record is that of a specialist trade book: it covers safety incidents, airline economics, fleet orders, airport development, and government aviation policy with an industry insider perspective, without the opinion-page culture or overt partisanship common to general-interest news outlets. No notable editorial controversies or partisan controversies have been reported in publicly available sources.
