Al Jazeera English
Qatari state-funded, left-leaning
Background
Al Jazeera Arabic was founded in 1996 by Qatar's then-Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani with an initial government loan of roughly $150 million. The English-language channel launched on November 15, 2006, backed by approximately $1 billion in Qatari government investment, with studios in Doha, London, Washington D.C., and Kuala Lumpur. From the start, its English service attracted Western journalists and adopted a somewhat more conventional international-news tone than its Arabic counterpart, though editorial tensions between expatriate producers and network leadership were reported early on. The network drew significant global attention after its frontline coverage of the Iraq War and the Arab Spring, which earned both praise for filling gaps left by Western outlets and criticism from governments—including the United States and several Arab states—who accused it of bias. In 2017 its English social media account retweeted an antisemitic meme, and in 2019 an AJ+ video minimized the Holocaust; both were removed with apologies. In 2020 the U.S. Department of Justice ordered AJ+ (its U.S.-focused digital offshoot) to register under the Foreign Agents Registration Act; as of 2026 that order remains unenforced and unheeded, prompting ongoing pressure from Congress. Media rating organizations classify Al Jazeera English as left-center to strongly left biased, with particular criticism focused on its framing of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and perceived alignment with Qatari diplomatic priorities.
