Al-Monitor launched in February 2012 and was founded by Jamal Daniel, a Syrian-born businessman with investments in oil and gas, telecommunications, media and real estate. Daniel also bought a large share of the Beirut daily As-Safir in 2011. The site started as a mostly translation-based service, publishing English versions of articles from regional Arab, Turkish, Iranian and Israeli media alongside original reporting.
