Background

Al-Monitor was launched on February 13, 2012, by Jamal Daniel, a Syrian-born entrepreneur whose family has reported ties to Syria's ruling Ba'ath Party. The outlet was founded in Washington, D.C., with the stated aim of bridging understanding between the Middle East and the international community by publishing analysis from regional journalists and experts. From the outset it attracted controversy: critics noted that Daniel had purchased a stake in As-Safir, a pro-Assad Lebanese newspaper, in 2011, and that some early Syria coverage echoed Syrian government framing. In 2018, Al-Monitor entered a management partnership with North Base Media, a digital media venture co-founded by former Washington Post and Wall Street Journal editor Marcus Brauchli, to guide operational and commercial strategy. The outlet won the International Press Institute's Free Media Pioneer Award in 2014. In 2023 it launched a subscription paywall and expanded into business and technology coverage. Media Bias/Fact Check rates it Left-Center with a High factual reporting score, reflecting solid sourcing but mild left-leaning story selection. The outlet publishes contributors from Israel, the Palestinian territories, Iran, Turkey, Egypt, and elsewhere, giving it a relatively diverse regional voice, though its editorial line on Iran and Syria has drawn criticism from analysts on multiple sides.
