Background

The American Economic Liberties Project was launched in February 2020 by Sarah Miller, who had previously served as Deputy Director of the Open Markets Institute and as a Department of the Treasury official. It was created to translate the intellectual momentum of the anti-monopoly movement into concrete policy advocacy. The organization is associated with the 'New Brandeis' school of antitrust thought, which argues that decades of narrow 'consumer welfare' antitrust standards allowed harmful concentrations of corporate power. Key figures include Matt Stoller, Director of Research, a longtime anti-monopoly writer and author of the book Goliath: The Hundred Year War Between Monopoly Power and Democracy. Miller stepped down as Executive Director in early 2023, transitioning to the board; Nidhi Hegde subsequently led the organization. Although AELP describes itself as nonpartisan, its leadership, funding base, and policy positions align closely with the progressive wing of the Democratic Party. It occasionally finds common ground with right-populist critics of big business on antitrust grounds. During Trump's second term, AELP has been consistently critical, co-releasing a fact sheet titled 'The Cost of Corruption' alleging that the administration's self-dealing raises costs for ordinary Americans, and hosting a March 2026 event titled 'Bending the Knee: How the Legal Establishment and Corporate America Embraced Corruption in the Trump Era.'
