Background

AEI was founded in 1938 as the American Enterprise Association, a business-oriented policy group, and took its current name in 1960s. It grew in the 1970s and 1980s as a leading conservative research center and later became a source of ideas and personnel for Republican administrations, especially on economics and national security. In the 2000s it was closely linked to the George W. Bush administration, and its scholars were prominent supporters of the Iraq War and the 2007 troop surge. Its research covers economics, health care, education, foreign and defense policy, and poverty. Under presidents Christopher DeMuth, Arthur Brooks and, since 2019, Robert Doar, it has also stressed work, family and social mobility. During the Trump years, AEI has been divided: many fellows are traditional free-market and internationalist conservatives who object to protectionist tariffs, and its scholars have publicly challenged the administration's tariff formula and argued that tariffs will not bring back manufacturing jobs. At the same time, AEI scholars have supported other administration goals, including tax and regulatory policy, and Doar has discussed the case for Trump's foreign policy and its limits. Critics on the left describe AEI as a corporate-aligned advocacy group, while some populist conservatives view it as a pre-Trump establishment institution. Its research is widely cited across the spectrum.
