American Rifleman
U.S. right (gun-rights advocacy)
Background
Founded in 1923, American Rifleman traces its roots to Arms and the Man and earlier 19th-century shooting-sport publications; it has been the NRA's flagship magazine for over a century. It has long combined firearms reviews, hunting and shooting-sports content, legislative and Second Amendment advocacy, and NRA organizational news. Its editorial content is produced in-house by NRA Media and functions as both a membership benefit and an advocacy tool, distinct from independent journalism outlets. The NRA itself has faced significant financial and governance turmoil in recent years, including a 2020 New York attorney general lawsuit alleging financial mismanagement by longtime executives, a 2021 bankruptcy filing that was dismissed, and a 2024 civil trial verdict finding financial wrongdoing by former NRA leadership, which strained the organization's budget and prompted restructuring of its publications division. Despite these pressures, American Rifleman has continued publishing, shifting some print output to quarterly issues alongside an enhanced monthly digital edition. The magazine consistently frames its coverage around opposition to gun-control measures and support for expansive Second Amendment rights, making it a reliably pro-gun-rights, right-leaning advocacy publication rather than a neutral news source.
