Background

American Thinker was founded in 2003 by Ed Lasky, Richard Baehr, and Thomas Lifson, with test articles posted in late 2003 and daily publishing beginning in January 2004. It rose to wider attention during the 2008 presidential campaign, publishing a high volume of articles critical of Barack Obama. Thomas Lifson, a former Harvard Business School faculty member who describes himself as a 'recovering academic' who moved from left to right politically, served as the primary editor and publisher for two decades before stepping back to Editor Emeritus in late 2024. The outlet operates as a platform for contributed conservative opinion pieces rather than original news reporting, and does not employ a traditional newsroom staff. In January 2021, American Thinker issued a notable retraction and public apology after publishing multiple articles falsely claiming that Dominion Voting Systems had conspired to steal the 2020 presidential election; the retraction came after Dominion's defamation attorneys sent a detailed legal letter, and the statement acknowledged the published claims were 'completely false.' Media rating organizations place American Thinker on the far-right end of the spectrum: AllSides rates it 'Right' and Media Bias/Fact Check rates it 'Extreme Right' with low factual reporting.
