Background

amNewYork launched on October 10, 2003, as New York City's first free daily newspaper, aimed at subway and train commuters. It was founded by Russel Pergament. The Tribune Company owned it, and in July 2008 Tribune sold it, together with Newsday, to Cablevision. It later sat within Newsday Media Group. Schneps Media bought it in October 2019, and it merged with Metro New York in January 2020 to form amNewYork Metro. Schneps began in 1985, when Victoria Schneps started a community paper in Bayside, Queens. It has since grown into a chain of hyperlocal papers and websites that includes the Brooklyn Paper, Bronx Times and Queens Times-Ledger, and it is also associated with Brownstoner and the Long Island Press. The Schneps family has strong ties to New York's business and political establishment. That closeness, along with heavy reliance on advertising and sponsored events, is a common criticism of community-news chains. amNY's output is largely wire-style, service-oriented local reporting rather than opinionated commentary. This is why it is usually seen as centrist or mainstream, not partisan.
