Background

ANI was founded in 1971 by Prem Prakash and grew into one of India's largest news agencies, supplying text and video to media outlets across India and abroad. Reuters bought a stake in 1993 and held 49% until it reduced its holding to 26% in 2022. Critics, including Caravan magazine and a report by the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP), have said ANI often relays the Indian government's version of events. The OCCRP report found it quoted think tanks and writers who appear not to exist, in pieces that favored the Indian government's positions against Pakistan and China. The Wire has also questioned ANI's government contract bids and its directors' links to competing firms. ANI has also been in the courts, including a defamation suit against Wikipedia's operator over how its Wikipedia page describes it. The Tribune was founded in Lahore in 1881 by philanthropist Dyal Singh Majithia, who placed it in a trust, and it moved to Chandigarh after the 1947 Partition. It covers Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir most closely, and is generally regarded as centrist and mainstream, with a record of independence from parties. It often carries wire copy from agencies such as ANI and PTI. Its coverage of the Trump administration is mostly factual and focuses on issues that affect India, so it does not take a consistent pro- or anti-Trump line.
