Background

Antiwar.com was founded on December 24, 1995, by Justin Raimondo and Eric Garris as a response to U.S. military intervention in Bosnia during the Clinton administration. Both founders were rooted in the libertarian movement — Raimondo was a paleoconservative libertarian and Garris came out of the Libertarian Party — and together they had co-founded the Libertarian Radical Caucus. The site's ideological framework draws from Murray Rothbard's libertarianism and Randolph Bourne's maxim that 'war is the health of the state,' which also gave its parent nonprofit its name. Over time the site grew into a prominent clearinghouse for anti-interventionist opinion and news, publishing contributors from across the political spectrum including Pat Buchanan, Ron Paul, Noam Chomsky, and Juan Cole. Justin Raimondo served as editorial director until his death in June 2019. A notable controversy emerged in 2013 when it was revealed the FBI had monitored Antiwar.com for six years, apparently based on an erroneous belief it posed a hacking threat.
