Background

Apollo News was founded in 2018 in Berlin-Treptow by Max Mannhart, who began it as a student blog. Mannhart had previously written for established German right-wing outlets such as 'Achse des Guten' and 'Tichys Einblick.' In 2022, the Apollo News team joined the editorial operation of Julian Reichelt — the former editor-in-chief of the tabloid Bild who was removed over misconduct allegations — and helped build the right-populist portal Nius. By 2023, Apollo News broke away to form its own independent company, Apollo Medien GmbH, with Mannhart as managing director and editor-in-chief. The outlet describes itself as a 'magazine for freedom,' emphasizing individual liberty, skepticism of state authority, and pushback against what it characterizes as a conformist, left-leaning German media establishment. Media Bias/Fact Check rates it Right (6.8 out of 10) with mixed factual reporting and medium credibility, citing highly partisan framing, heavy focus on migrant crime, and favorable coverage of far-right figures. In July 2025, a Frankfurt court issued preliminary injunctions requiring Apollo News to retract specific claims about a transgender advocacy organization that were found to be false. That same year, the Berlin chapter of The Left party organized a campaign to pressure Apollo News out of its Treptow neighborhood, which Mannhart publicly denounced as an attack on press freedom. The outlet approvingly covers Trump-aligned figures such as former U.S. Ambassador Richard Grenell and reflects a political outlook aligned with the international right-wing populist movement that Trump represents.
