Asheville Watchdog
U.S. left-center
Background
Asheville Watchdog launched on April 17, 2020, founded by Bob Gremillion, a former Tribune Publishing executive; Sally Kestin, a 2013 Pulitzer Prize winner; and Peter Lewis, a former New York Times editor — all retired professionals living in western North Carolina. The outlet was conceived as a civic-service venture staffed largely by volunteers and low-pay journalists filling the investigative gap left by declining local news. It is structured as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit funded entirely by foundation grants and reader donations, with no corporate ownership or government support. The Columbia Journalism Review and other outlets noted its unusual model: a band of retired journalists producing accountability journalism for free or near-free. It has won multiple awards in North Carolina Press Association competitions, including first-place honors for investigative and feature reporting. The outlet has a clean fact-check record and is rated highly credible by media monitoring organizations, though Media Bias/Fact Check places it in the left-center category. The Watchdog itself has acknowledged that its staff's personal views likely skew progressive, reflecting the political climate of Asheville, and has published self-critical opinion pieces examining reader complaints — from both the left and right — about its Trump-era coverage. Since January 2025, its reporting has concentrated on how Trump administration actions affect the local community, including cuts to federal scientific staff based in Asheville, deportation fears among immigrant residents, and disputes over FEMA's response to Hurricane Helene damage.
