Background

The publication traces its roots to the Jeil (Cheil) Economic Daily, founded on June 15, 1988, in Seoul, South Korea. In 2005, it merged with a Korean online outlet also called Asia Economic Daily, adopting an 'online-offline integrated' model under the current Asia Business Daily name. The combined entity initially published a morning paper but switched to an evening edition in 2007. In 2015 it became the first Korean economic media company to list on the KOSDAQ exchange, giving it a public market profile alongside its editorial operations. The conglomerate KMH Co., Ltd. was the controlling shareholder for much of that period until July 2021, when Seoul-based Keystone Private Equity completed a KRW 23.2 billion (approximately $20 million) PIPE transaction for an 18% stake, making Keystone the leading shareholder. Beginning in 2024, the outlet expanded its international coverage through licensing agreements with Bloomberg and the South China Morning Post. Its editorial focus is business, markets, real estate, and macroeconomic policy; it does not carry a strong partisan identity in South Korean politics and is broadly regarded as a mainstream commercial business daily covering Korean and Asian economic affairs.
