Background

A Bangkok-based print newspaper called Asia Times launched in 1995 and closed in mid-1997. It was owned by Thai media mogul Sondhi Limthongkul. Asia Times Online started in early 1999 and described itself as the print paper's successor. It became known for geopolitical commentary, including the long-running 'Spengler' column by David P. Goldman, and for contributors with an alternative view of U.S. foreign policy. The site was relaunched in October 2016 with Uwe Parpart as editor and later dropped 'Online' from its name. The publisher is now Asia Times Holdings Limited, registered in Hong Kong. Ideanomics announced a 10% stake in a joint venture with the outlet in 2018.
