Background

Asianet News traces its roots to 1995, when it launched as the news division of Asianet — the first private Malayalam-language TV channel in Kerala, India, and a pioneer of live news broadcasting in the country. Rajeev Chandrasekhar, through Jupiter Entertainment Ventures, acquired a controlling stake in the Asianet channels in 2006, later restructuring the network under Jupiter Capital Private Limited. The broader Asianet News Network expanded to Kannada-language television (Suvarna News), print (Kannada Prabha), and radio (Indigo 91.9 FM). Asianet Newsable — the English digital platform — was launched around 2016 to target a national and diaspora audience beyond the Malayalam- and Kannada-speaking base. In 2016, Newslaundry reported that a Jupiter Capital executive had emailed editorial staff seeking new hires who were 'right of centre' in editorial tone and aligned with Chandrasekhar's views on nationalism; the email was retracted after internal pushback, and the then-editor-in-chief said he had faced no editorial pressure. Chandrasekhar went on to serve as India's Minister of State for Electronics and IT under Prime Minister Narendra Modi from 2021 to 2024, deepening the association between the outlet's ownership and the BJP establishment. Critics have characterized the network's coverage as broadly sympathetic to Hindu-nationalist perspectives, while the outlet itself describes its journalism as unbiased and independent.
