Australian defence and foreign-policy think tank; pro-alliance, China-skeptical
ASPI is a Canberra think tank created by the Australian government and funded mainly by the Defence Department, other governments and industry. Its orientation is strongly pro-U.S.-alliance and hawkish on China. Its recent commentary is mixed toward the Trump administration: it defends the alliance but publishes sharp criticism of U.S. unpredictability, and it urges Australia to plan for reduced U.S. leadership.
Owned byAustralian Strategic Policy Institute Limited, a company limited by guarantee. It was set up by the Australian government in 2001 and sits in the Defence portfolio. It is governed by its own council. It publishes The Strategist blog and research reports.
