Associated Press (carried by Colorado Sun and others)
U.S. center-left
Background
The AP was founded in May 1846 when five New York City daily newspapers formed a cooperative to share the cost of covering the Mexican-American War. It expanded rapidly in the telegraph era and reorganized under its current name after a midwestern breakaway group reincorporated the organization in Illinois in 1892. Throughout the 20th century AP grew into the world's largest wire service, pioneering same-day photo transmission with Wirephoto in 1935 and later adopting satellite and digital distribution. It has maintained a not-for-profit cooperative structure throughout its history — member organizations elect a board and pay licensing fees rather than receive dividends. Revenue is also supplemented by philanthropic grants. Independent media bias analysts consistently place AP in the center-left range: highly rated for factual accuracy but showing a leftward lean in story selection, framing, and word choice. Beginning in February 2025, the Trump White House banned AP reporters from Oval Office access and press pool events after AP refused to adopt the administration's preferred 'Gulf of America' designation; AP sued administration officials, a district court initially ordered access restored, but the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit ruled 2-1 in the administration's favor, leaving AP with severely restricted White House access through at least mid-2026.
