Background

The Associated Press was founded in 1846 by five New York newspapers that pooled resources to share telegraph dispatches from the Mexican-American War, making it one of the oldest continuously operating news organizations in the world. It grew into a global wire service, eventually supplying reporting to thousands of outlets in over 100 countries. Because its members span the political spectrum—from small-town conservative papers to major urban broadcasters—AP developed a strong institutional norm of fact-based, politically neutral reporting. Media bias trackers disagree modestly on its actual tilt: Ad Fontes Media consistently places it near the center with high reliability scores, while AllSides moved its rating to 'Left' in an April 2025 editorial review, and Media Bias/Fact Check rates it 'Left-Center.' In February 2025, the Trump White House barred AP reporters from pooled press events after the wire service refused to adopt the administration's preferred term 'Gulf of America' in place of the established 'Gulf of Mexico.' AP sued, but a federal appeals court upheld the ban in a 2-1 ruling in mid-2025; AP continued pursuing the case.
