Background

The AP was founded in 1846 when five New York City daily newspapers pooled resources to cover the Mexican-American War, and it was formally incorporated as a cooperative in Illinois in 1892. From its earliest years, the AP positioned itself as a nonpartisan wire service supplying news to both Democratic- and Republican-aligned papers, a model that shaped its identity as a straight-news provider. A 1945 Supreme Court antitrust ruling forced the AP to open its membership to competing newspapers, preventing it from acting as a closed club for established papers. Through the 20th century, it grew into one of the world's largest newsgathering organizations, operating in roughly 250 locations globally. In recent years, the AP has supplemented its traditional licensing revenue with substantial philanthropic grant funding, drawing criticism from conservative commentators who note that some donor foundations hold progressive leanings.
