Background

The Associated Press was founded in 1846—formally organized in 1848—when six major New York City daily newspapers agreed to share the costs of gathering national and international news by telegraph. It grew into the world's largest newsgathering cooperative, now operating more than 235 bureaus in 94 countries and publishing in English, Spanish, and Arabic. Because it is structured as a nonprofit cooperative rather than a commercial company, it has long maintained that its mission is neutral, factual newsgathering rather than profit or advocacy; independent analysts, however, consistently rate its output as leaning modestly left of center in framing and story selection. In recent years the AP has diversified its revenue by accepting philanthropic grants for specific beats—a practice that drew criticism in 2025 when a Wall Street Journal report noted that grants from progressive-leaning foundations had coincided with reporting favorable to those funders' interests. The Trump administration's second term brought direct confrontation: in February 2025, the White House barred AP journalists from the Oval Office and Air Force One after the wire service declined to use 'Gulf of America' in its style guide. A federal district court ordered access restored in April 2025 on First Amendment grounds, but a federal appeals court ruled in June 2025 that the administration could continue barring the AP from certain pooled events. The AP subsequently filed an appeal. Throughout the dispute its coverage of the Trump administration has remained consistently skeptical in tone, reflecting what bias trackers describe as a lean-left editorial posture.
