Background

AT&T traces its origins to Alexander Graham Bell's telephone patents in the 1870s and the founding of the American Telephone and Telegraph Company in 1885. It grew into a federally regulated monopoly before a landmark antitrust ruling broke it into regional 'Baby Bell' carriers in 1984. Over the following decades AT&T reconsolidated, reacquiring several of those regional companies. In 2018 it acquired Time Warner for approximately $85 billion, rebranding the division WarnerMedia and gaining control of CNN, HBO, TBS, Turner Classic Movies, and Warner Bros. studios. Weighed down by debt and under pressure from investors, AT&T reversed course and spun off WarnerMedia in April 2022, merging it with Discovery Inc. to create Warner Bros. Discovery — ending AT&T's direct involvement in news and entertainment media. Today AT&T is purely a telecommunications provider focused on wireless, fiber broadband, and business services, with no editorial operations or news outlet. During the Trump administration's second term, AT&T ended its diversity, equity, and inclusion programs in a letter to the FCC while seeking spectrum approvals, and its CEO publicly praised the administration's investment and deregulation agenda in early 2026.
