Background

The paper began as the Avery Journal, founded in Newland, North Carolina, in 1959 by Sherman Pritchard. It serves as Avery County's newspaper of record. It also covers parts of southern Watauga County, northern Mitchell County and Roan Mountain, Tennessee. It prints weekly on Thursdays and is distributed through nearly 100 rack locations in Newland, Banner Elk, Crossnore, Spruce Pine and Roan Mountain. Before 2016 it was part of Jones Media Inc. of Greeneville, Tennessee. On September 1, 2016, Jones Media's assets, including the Journal-Times and its sister paper the Mountain Times, were sold to Adams Publishing Group. That company renamed itself Adams MultiMedia in 2025. Some directory listings still name other people as owner or publisher, so they may be outdated or inconsistent. The paper has won North Carolina Press Association awards, but I found no notable controversies. Its perspective is that of a local newspaper of record, with little national opinion content. I could not review its recent coverage of the Trump administration in detail, so the administration stance rests on its local focus rather than a systematic review.
