Bearing Arms (Opinion)
U.S. right (pro-Second Amendment)
Background
Bearing Arms launched in August 2013 as a dedicated Second Amendment property within Townhall Media, which is owned by Salem Media Group, a large conservative media conglomerate. Bob Owens, a longtime gun-rights blogger who had written for Pajamas Media, was named editor in October 2013 and helped build the site's early readership — reportedly reaching one million unique readers in its first month. Owens died in May 2017 from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. In July 2019, Cam Edwards, a former host at NRATV, took over as editor and has remained the site's primary voice. Bearing Arms is a sister publication to Townhall, RedState, Hot Air, Twitchy, and PJ Media, all under the Townhall Media umbrella. Media Bias/Fact Check rates it as right-biased with mixed factual reporting, citing occasional reliance on poor sources. The site functions primarily as an opinion and advocacy outlet rather than a traditional news organization, openly positioning itself as pro-Second Amendment journalism. In 2025–2026, Bearing Arms has taken a notably independent posture toward the Trump administration on gun issues, criticizing the ATF's continued enforcement of certain regulations, the administration's defense of federal gun restrictions in court, and the Justice Department's failure to restore gun rights to nonviolent felons despite announced policy changes.
