Benchmark Mineral Intelligence
UK industry-specialist, politically neutral
Background
Simon Moores founded Benchmark Mineral Intelligence in London in 2014, initially as a specialist research and consultancy service covering rare earth elements and battery materials. The firm grew in prominence as the electric vehicle market expanded, and its benchmark prices for lithium, cobalt, graphite, and other battery-critical materials became widely referenced by industry, investors, and policymakers. Benchmark sets the industry reference price for lithium-ion battery components and raw materials, a role comparable to what Platts or Argus Media play in oil and gas. In May 2024, the company received the King's Award for Enterprise in International Trade, a UK government business honor. In November 2023, the company took its first-ever outside investment when Spectrum Equity, a U.S. growth-equity firm, purchased a 20% stake for around $100 million, implying a roughly $500 million valuation. Andy Miller, who had served as COO since 2021, was named CEO in January 2025, with Moores moving to Executive Chairman. Because Benchmark is a B2B data and price-reporting agency rather than a journalism outlet, it does not carry traditional editorial opinions; its analysis is driven by supply-chain data and commodity market dynamics, and it covers U.S. critical-minerals policy primarily through the lens of market impact on battery supply chains.
