Bloomberg Law
U.S. center / center-left
Background
Bloomberg Law was launched as a web-based platform in 2009–2010 by Bloomberg L.P., which had been co-founded by Michael Bloomberg in 1981 as a financial data and media company. To deepen its legal content, Bloomberg L.P. acquired the Bureau of National Affairs (BNA) in 2011 for roughly $990 million; BNA had been a leading publisher of legal and regulatory news since its founding by David Lawrence in 1929. Bloomberg integrated BNA's extensive primary and secondary legal materials into Bloomberg Law, significantly expanding its research depth. In September 2019, Bloomberg BNA was rebranded as Bloomberg Industry Group, an umbrella for Bloomberg Law, Bloomberg Tax, Bloomberg Government, and Bloomberg Environment. Bloomberg Law is aimed at legal professionals and is known for docket tracking, court filings, and practitioner-focused analysis. Broader Bloomberg media properties are consistently rated center to center-left by media bias trackers such as AllSides and Media Bias/Fact Check, partly reflecting story selection rather than overt editorializing. Bloomberg Law itself follows that tradition of factual, professional reporting, though its parent company's ownership by a Democratic-aligned billionaire is a noted contextual factor.
