Background

Breitbart News was founded in 2007 by Andrew Breitbart, a conservative commentator who set out to build a right-leaning alternative to mainstream media. After Andrew Breitbart died suddenly in March 2012, Steve Bannon took over as executive chairman and sharpened the site's identity around nationalist and populist themes, later calling it 'the platform for the alt-right' during the 2016 campaign. The outlet became one of the most prominent media boosters of Donald Trump's 2016 presidential run, and Bannon subsequently served as Trump's chief strategist in the White House. Bannon left Breitbart in January 2018 after published remarks attributed to him criticized Trump, prompting the Mercer family to withdraw support; editor-in-chief Alexander Marlow has helmed the editorial operation since. Conservative megadonor Robert Mercer had invested roughly $10 million in the site but transferred his ownership stake to his daughters in late 2017 following public controversy over his associations with Bannon. Web traffic peaked around the 2016 election — reaching roughly 17 million monthly visitors in early 2017 — and declined sharply in the years that followed. Breitbart has faced sustained criticism from media researchers and fact-checkers for publishing misinformation and content described as racist or anti-immigrant; the site's owners dispute those characterizations.
