Background

Breitbart News Network was founded in 2007 by Andrew Breitbart, a conservative media personality who wanted to build a right-leaning counterweight to what he saw as a liberal mainstream media. The site originally positioned itself as a populist conservative aggregator, with Breitbart describing its philosophy as 'politics is downstream from culture.' After Andrew Breitbart died of heart failure in March 2012, Steve Bannon took over as executive chairman and steered the outlet toward the nationalist and alt-right movements, famously declaring in 2016 that it was 'the platform for the alt-right.' Hedge fund billionaire Robert Mercer was a major financial backer, but in November 2017 he announced he was selling his stake to his daughters — chiefly Rebekah Mercer — amid backlash over the site's association with controversial figures. Bannon departed as chairman in January 2018 following a falling-out with Trump over quotes attributed to him in Michael Wolff's book Fire and Fury. Alexander Marlow has served as editor-in-chief, and under his direction the site has remained firmly in the pro-Trump populist-nationalist lane. More than 2,000 advertisers pulled their spending from the site following activist pressure in 2016–2017, but it rebuilt its ad base and traffic over subsequent years. Throughout Trump's second term beginning in January 2025, Breitbart has provided favorable coverage of administration policies on immigration, trade, and crime, and has enjoyed regular access to senior administration officials.
