Background

Brigham and Women's Hospital was established in 1980 through the merger of three Harvard-affiliated hospitals: Peter Bent Brigham Hospital (founded 1913), Robert Breck Brigham Hospital (founded 1914), and Boston Hospital for Women (itself a 1966 merger of institutions dating to 1832). In 1994, BWH and Massachusetts General Hospital co-founded Partners HealthCare, one of the country's largest nonprofit hospital systems. The system rebranded as Mass General Brigham in 2019 to better reflect its member institutions. MGB is the largest private employer in Massachusetts and the nation's largest academic medical recipient of NIH research grants. Beginning in early 2025, the Trump administration terminated tens of millions of dollars in NIH grants tied to MGB's research programs in areas including pandemic preparedness, primary care, and reproductive health; MGB's own doctors publicly pressed hospital leadership to take a firmer stand against the administration's demands. MGB declined to comment publicly on federal DEI compliance demands while maintaining its internal diversity programs. The system's official communications function as institutional advocacy for academic medicine and biomedical research rather than as journalism, but they consistently reflect priorities — federally funded research, health equity, clinical science — that have put MGB at odds with the current administration.
