Background

Brigham and Women's Hospital traces its roots to 1832 (the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital and related institutions), and Massachusetts General Hospital dates to 1811. In 1994 the two formed Partners HealthCare, partly as a defensive step amid health care deregulation. The system grew by adding community hospitals, physician groups and insurance-related businesses, and it drew criticism and state scrutiny for its market power and high prices. In 2019 Partners rebranded as Mass General Brigham. It is now New England's largest health system, with roughly 82,000 employees. In April 2025, more than 220 MGB physicians and other workers urged leaders to reject Trump administration demands tied to threatened funding cuts to Harvard and its affiliates. As of October 2026, about 4,000 Brigham nurses have set an open-ended strike for October 14 over wages and health insurance costs, after a one-day strike and a lockout in July. The nurses' union has also alleged conflicts of interest on MGB's board and asked the state attorney general to investigate, claims MGB has not been shown here to have conceded. Its own newsroom and website content is self-published and favorable to the institution, such as rankings in U.S. News & World Report's Best Hospitals Honor Roll. It should be read as organizational communication rather than independent reporting.
