Brussels Signal launched in May 2023, positioning itself as a challenger to what it called EU media 'groupthink.' It was founded by Patrick Egan, an American political consultant who had previously worked as a campaign adviser to Hungary's Fidesz party and whose consultancy FWD Affairs also funded Remix News, an English-language outlet widely seen as amplifying Orbán government narratives to Western audiences. Editor-in-Chief Michael Mosbacher had earlier helped launch two British conservative magazines, Standpoint and The Critic. The outlet's funding sources were opaque from the start; investigative Hungarian and European media reported in 2024 that Fidesz-linked Mediaworks was providing the bulk of its operating budget, with a contractual arrangement requiring Brussels Signal to share not just content but Brussels-sourced information with Mediaworks contacts — raising serious questions about editorial independence.
