Background
Brussels Signal launched in May 2023, pitched as an alternative to what its founders called Brussels' consensus-driven press corps, aiming to cover EU institutions with more skepticism of centralized power. It was founded and is run by Patrick Egan, an American political consultant with ties to Hungary's governing Fidesz party (his wife was a Fidesz municipal official, and he has advised the party). For years the outlet did not disclose its financial backers, despite a reported €275,000 in startup capital and a 174-million-forint Hungarian loan in 2022. A May 2026 investigation by the Hungarian outlet Atlatszo found that Brussels Signal's entire 2024 budget, about €1.5 million, came from Mediaworks, a media conglomerate aligned with Fidesz and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, reportedly in exchange for sharing information gathered in Brussels. Media-bias trackers including AllSides and Ground News classify it as right-leaning to right-center, citing frequent favorable story selection toward Trump and European nationalist politicians, alongside a generally high factual-accuracy rating. The outlet positions itself as independent EU-affairs journalism, but its undisclosed Fidesz-linked funding and its editorial sympathy for nationalist and Trump-aligned figures mark it as a partisan actor within Brussels media rather than a neutral one.
