Background
The Buenos Aires Herald was founded in 1876 by Scottish immigrant William Cathcart, making it one of the oldest English-language newspapers in Latin America. Thomas Bell purchased the paper in 1913 and led it for roughly three decades. The outlet gained its most significant international recognition during Argentina's military dictatorship (1976–1983), when editor Robert Cox published detailed accounts of the regime's forced disappearances and human rights abuses at a time when most Spanish-language Argentine media stayed silent. Cox was eventually forced into exile for his reporting. The paper changed hands several times in subsequent decades, passing through multiple Argentine media groups before Grupo Indalo—owned by Cristóbal López, a businessman with close ties to the Kirchner-era Peronist governments—acquired it in 2015 along with the financial daily Ámbito Financiero. Struggling financially, the Herald ceased its daily print edition in 2016, briefly published a weekly edition, and shut down entirely in 2017 after 141 years of continuous publication. On March 24, 2023, the Herald was relaunched as a digital-only English-language publication under new editorial leadership, positioning itself as an outlet covering Argentine economics, politics, culture, and society for an English-speaking audience. The relaunched outlet invokes the paper's human-rights heritage while emphasizing economic and financial news coverage.
