Background

Founded in 1884 (reorganized into its modern form under the Department of Labor in 1913), the BLS is the U.S. government's principal fact-finding agency for labor economics, producing monthly jobs reports, the Consumer Price Index, and other closely watched statistics. It has historically been regarded as one of the most professionally independent and methodologically rigorous statistical agencies in the world, staffed largely by career economists insulated from political appointees. In August 2025, President Trump fired BLS Commissioner Erika McEntarfer after a weak July jobs report included large downward revisions, alleging without evidence that the data were 'rigged'; fact-checkers and economists found no support for that claim and noted revisions are a normal, expected part of the agency's methodology. Trump then nominated E.J. Antoni, a vocal BLS critic, to lead the agency, but withdrew the nomination in September 2025 amid controversy over Antoni's past statements and conduct; he later named economist Brett Matsumoto, a Heritage Foundation-linked contributor to Project 2025, as a replacement pick. A September 2025 preliminary benchmark revision showing job growth had been overstated by a record 911,000 intensified administration attacks on the agency, though a subsequent 2026 benchmark revision showed a much smaller, near-average overcount. The episode marked an unusual period of open political pressure on an agency long insulated from partisan influence, though the agency's underlying data and methods have not been shown to be compromised.
