Business Insurance
U.S. trade press (industry-focused, not politically aligned)
Background
Business Insurance launched on October 30, 1967, founded by G.D. Crain and first edited by his son Rance Crain, aiming to serve commercial insurance buyers rather than sellers. It was published by Crain Communications for nearly five decades, building its reputation partly through its long-running annual ranking of the largest U.S. insurance brokers, introduced in 1972. BusinessInsurance.com launched in 1996, and the magazine marked its 50th anniversary in 2017. The Crain family sold the title in 2016 to Adam Potter, founder of the Claims and Litigation Management Alliance, and it was acquired again in 2019 by Business Insurance Holdings, a division of Beacon Intercontinental Group, a company with roots in insurance publishing dating to 1889. As a specialized trade outlet, it has no significant history of partisan political controversy; its editorial identity is built on being a reliable industry-of-record source for risk managers rather than a general-news or opinion outlet, and its coverage of government policy is filtered through its effect on the insurance and risk-management industry.
