Caixin Global
Chinese independent business press
Background
Hu Shuli founded Caijing magazine in 1998, building a reputation for unusually bold investigative reporting on corporate corruption and government policy in China. In November 2009, she resigned from Caijing—along with roughly 90 percent of its staff—following a dispute with the magazine's owner over editorial control, and promptly established Caixin Media Company Ltd. Caixin launched an English-language platform, Caixin Global, to reach international audiences with business and economic news about China. In 2013, China Media Capital (CMC), a government-backed investment fund, acquired a roughly 40 percent stake and became Caixin's largest single shareholder; technology companies Tencent and Ant Group later joined as investors. Wang Shuo became editor-in-chief in 2018, while Hu Shuli remained as publisher; Caixin also created a Credibility Committee of outside figures meant to protect editorial policy from commercial or ownership pressure. Despite that structure, Caixin has faced repeated regulatory friction: in 2016, China's Cyberspace Administration suspended its content-syndication credentials for two months over reports deemed 'problematic'; in October 2021, authorities removed it from the official list of pre-approved news sources that other platforms may republish, sharply limiting its domestic reach. Caixin is widely regarded as one of China's more independent and credible business outlets, but like all Chinese media it operates under domestic press law and faces real constraints on politically sensitive coverage.
