California Globe launched in September 2018 as part of Sea of Reeds Media, a network of politically oriented state-level news sites. The company was founded by Ken Kurson, who had previously served as editor-in-chief of the New York Observer when it was owned by Jared Kushner's family, and publisher Kevin Sanders. Katy Grimes, a longtime Sacramento political journalist, was brought on as editor-in-chief to oversee day-to-day coverage. The outlet describes itself as 'pro-growth, pro-business, non-partisan and objective,' but independent media-rating organizations — including Media Bias/Fact Check (Right-Center), Ground News (Lean Right), and Biasly — classify it as having a right-leaning editorial orientation with mixed factual reporting. A 2021 CalMatters investigation, cited widely by other outlets, named California Globe as one of several partisan sites used to distribute GOP opposition research and misleadingly framed stories that helped flip California congressional seats in 2020; the report cited a specific Globe story about Rep. Gil Cisneros that omitted key context to suggest improper stock trading. Ken Kurson's own background added to scrutiny of the outlet: he was arrested in 2020 on federal cyberstalking charges, pardoned by Trump in January 2021, then pleaded guilty to state charges in 2022. The site has grown its traffic significantly, reporting more than one million monthly page views by 2020. Coverage during Trump's second term has continued to skew favorably toward administration policies, particularly on border security and opposition to California Democratic leadership.
