Background

The Campus Echo was founded in 1927 and has operated continuously since, making it one of the oldest student newspapers at an HBCU in the United States. It is produced by students in NCCU's Department of Mass Communication and publishes in print (approximately 4,000 copies distributed across campus) and online at campusecho.com. Over the past 15 years, the paper has won more than 250 national and regional awards from organizations including the Society of Professional Journalists, the Associated Collegiate Press, the Black College Communication Association, and the North Carolina College Media Association — among them the national Mark of Excellence Award for Best Online Student Newspaper. The paper has historically seen itself as part of the broader Black press tradition; it played a role in inspiring the founding of The Nubian Message, a Black student newspaper at N.C. State University, when NCCU's then-editor-in-chief supported student protests against racially biased coverage there. As an HBCU student newspaper, the Campus Echo regularly covers issues directly affecting its community, including federal higher education policy, HBCU funding, and racial equity in education — topics on which its coverage reflects the concerns of its student readership. Under the second Trump administration (from January 2025), the paper has reported on federal DEI rollbacks, HBCU funding changes, and the broader impact of administration higher education policy on institutions like NCCU.
