Cannabis Business Times
U.S. cannabis-industry trade press
Background
Cannabis Business Times was founded in July 2014 by publisher Tim Hermes (Hermes Media and Research, Arlington, Va.) and editor Noelle Skodzinski, launching as a digital brand on September 1, 2014, with a daily website and weekly e-newsletter aimed at the state-legal cannabis industry. In April 2015, GIE Media Inc. — a Cleveland-based B2B media company whose portfolio includes horticultural and landscaping titles — acquired the publication, keeping Skodzinski on as editorial director and folding it into its Horticulture group. Under GIE Media, the outlet expanded to include sister brands Cannabis Dispensary and Hemp Grower magazines. In 2018, the American Society of Business Publication Editors named Cannabis Business Times its National Magazine of the Year (under-$3M revenue category), citing its editorial quality. On August 1, 2024, Skodzinski reacquired the brand through her company Transpire Media LLC, returning it to founder control. As a B2B trade title, its editorial orientation is firmly pro-industry: it advocates for policies that benefit licensed cannabis businesses, covers compliance and cultivation practices, and scrutinizes federal actions — including rescheduling debates and DOJ enforcement shifts under the Trump administration — through the lens of their business impact on legal operators.
