Background

Carolina Forward grew out of the Long Leaf Pine Slate, a temporary vehicle created to influence the 2022 North Carolina midterms. It later became a permanent progressive policy organization. In 2022 it endorsed nine candidates and reported about 78,000 email subscribers, 60 articles, two policy papers and seven polls. Blair Reeves is its executive director. It publishes articles and policy papers, runs polling, and distributes content through its website and a Substack newsletter. It also raises money for Democratic-aligned candidates through ActBlue. Describing itself as an independent, grassroots think tank, it is better characterized as a left-of-center advocacy organization with a clear partisan orientation. It is not a neutral news outlet. Its output is focused on North Carolina politics and policy and favors progressive and Democratic positions. I did not find notable corrections or controversies in the sources I could access, and I could not check its donors in detail.
