Background

The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation was created by Parliament in 1936 as a Crown corporation, growing out of the 1929 Aird Commission's call for a national public broadcaster and replacing the earlier Canadian Radio Broadcasting Commission. Its founding mandate was to promote Canadian culture and national unity and to serve audiences in both English and French. CBC expanded from radio into television in the 1950s and later built a major digital news presence at cbc.ca.
