Background

CBS launched experimental television station W2XAB in New York City on July 21, 1931, making it one of the earliest TV operations in the United States. It became the commercial station WCBW on July 1, 1941—one of the first commercial TV stations in the country—and was renamed WCBS-TV on November 1, 1946. The station has operated continuously as a CBS owned-and-operated outlet and serves as the network's flagship station. Westinghouse purchased CBS in 1995, and Viacom acquired it in 2000, folding it into the Viacom Television Stations Group; CBS and Viacom remerged in 2019 as ViacomCBS, later rebranded Paramount Global. In August 2025, Skydance Media completed a merger with Paramount Global to form Paramount Skydance Corporation, with FCC approval contingent on Ellison pledging to hire a conservative news ombudsman (Kenneth Weinstein, former president of the Hudson Institute), scrap diversity programs, and restructure how interviews are broadcast on Face the Nation—moves widely seen as concessions to the Trump administration. Media bias assessors including Media Bias/Fact Check and Biasly rate CBS New York as slightly left-center, reflecting its New York City audience and editorial tendencies, though they also credit it with generally high factual reliability. The station broadcasts more than 33 hours of local news weekly and operates CBS News New York, a 24-hour streaming local news channel.
