Background

The paper was founded in 1886 as the Charlotte Chronicle and was reorganized as the Charlotte Daily Observer in 1892. Knight Newspapers acquired it in 1955, and when Knight merged with Ridder Publications in 1974, The Observer became part of the Knight Ridder chain — eventually ranking as one of that chain's larger properties. McClatchy purchased Knight Ridder's papers, including The Observer, in 2006, making it a stable regional title in a large chain. Financial pressures mounted industry-wide over the following decade, and McClatchy filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2020; hedge fund Chatham Asset Management acquired the company in September of that year. In December 2024, McClatchy merged with another Chatham-owned company, A360media. The Observer's print circulation fell from more than 222,000 weekday copies in 2005 to roughly 10,700 by early 2024 — a drop of about 95% — leading management to cut home delivery and reduce print editions to three days a week beginning in September 2024. Media-bias organizations including Media Bias/Fact Check, AllSides, and Ground News rate The Observer as left-center or lean-left, citing editorial positions that favor liberal policy stances, while also crediting the paper with high factual reliability. Editorially, the paper has published pieces sharply critical of the Trump administration in both his first and second terms.
