Background

THE CITY was announced in September 2018 via a press release from the Charles H. Revson Foundation and launched digitally in April 2019, created to fill the gap left by declining local news coverage in New York City. It was founded as a nonprofit with no paywall, relying entirely on grants, donations, and sponsors rather than subscriptions or advertising. Jere Hester, a former New York Daily News city editor, served as founding editor-in-chief, and Kai Falkenberg was its first executive director. Richard Kim became editor-in-chief in February 2022, and Carroll Bogert — previously president of The Marshall Project — joined as CEO in October 2025. The outlet built a record of investigative work credited with prompting criminal indictments, political resignations, ethics inquiries, and changes in law and city budget decisions. Its funders are predominantly major progressive-leaning New York philanthropies, which shapes a reform-minded editorial orientation, though it does not formally affiliate with any party. In May 2026, THE CITY rebranded as The City Reporter, while maintaining the same nonprofit structure, mission, and leadership.
