CleanTechnica
U.S. left-leaning, clean-energy advocacy
Background
CleanTechnica published its first article on February 9, 2008, founded by Scott Cooney as part of a green-media network then called Green Options Media (later renamed Important Media). Zach Shahan took over as editor around 2010 and eventually became CEO and Editor-in-Chief, building the site into what it describes as the world's largest cleantech news outlet, with roughly 5 million monthly readers. Important Media operates as a network of approximately 20 progressive, sustainability-focused blogs; it has no major institutional financial backer and is not state-affiliated. Revenue comes mostly from advertising, with voluntary reader subscriptions providing a secondary income stream; the site acknowledged in 2024 that programmatic advertising sometimes placed pro-fossil-fuel ads on its pages, a tension it discussed openly. Media Bias/Fact Check rates it left-center on the political spectrum with high factual reliability, and Biasly scores it at roughly -14% (somewhat left), attributing its lean to editorial mission rather than misleading language. In August 2023 Shahan announced the site's first-ever outside investor, a $15,000 personal stake from a private individual — a sign of how lean its capital structure remains. Its coverage of the Trump administration's second term has been sharply critical, framing EPA rollbacks, clean-energy grant cancellations, and fossil-fuel permitting expansions as environmental attacks, and using language such as 'assault on the environment' and 'psychopathic' in headlines.
