CNBC-TV18
Indian business/financial
Background
CNBC-TV18 launched in 2001 as a joint venture between Network18 (then TV18 India) and NBCUniversal, becoming India's first and dominant business news channel. Reliance Industries, led by Mukesh Ambani, took effective control of Network18 in 2014 through a complex debt-to-equity conversion involving the Independent Media Trust, a move that triggered the resignations of senior editors at sister channels who cited editorial interference. In October 2024, TV18 Broadcast was formally merged into its parent Network18, consolidating CNBC-TV18 fully under Network18's news portfolio. The channel has faced recurring criticism, including a 2026 dispute in which Essel Group chairman Subhash Chandra accused Reliance-linked channels, including CNBC-TV18, of unfair headline framing in coverage related to his company. As a business-news outlet, its reporting on U.S. affairs centers on markets, trade, and economic policy, including U.S.-India trade and tariff issues under the Trump administration, rather than domestic American politics. Analysts and media watchdogs note that Reliance's ownership constrains any in-depth editorial scrutiny of the conglomerate itself, a structural concern more relevant to its Indian coverage than its U.S.-focused reporting.
